Discussion #2: Figurative language in songs

The other day, I was listening to Katy Perry's Firework and I realized that the song contains a lot of figurative language.

For this week, introduce us to other song lyrics that contain similes and metaphors.

Instructions:
1. Think of a song that contains figurative language. Find it on YouTube and add the link.
2. In exactly five sentences, explain what the song is about.

Deadline: Friday, 5 pm

Quick writing tip: Including similes and metaphors are a great way to create more vivid descriptive essays.

"It's hard to believe there is nobody out there, it's hard to believe I'm all alone, at least I have her love, the city she loves me, lonely as I am together we cry..." - Personification. This song was written by Anthony Kiedis during a time when he remained sober from both drugs and alcohol. The song is about his depression and loneliness during this time. He felt that he was isolated by his best friend because he stayed sober. This is when he would wander alone in the city of Los Angeles and feel a spiritual connection with the city because of his loneliness. He felt that the city was watching over him in this time of depression.

  2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7M4aKcwQtCU. Technicolor Phase by Owl City is about expressing one’s feelings to the one you love. It is about letting her know that he is very much a part of her world… in any time of the day, anywhere and everywhere. The colors aids in visually describing each feeling.” I am the green in the grass that bends back from underneath your feet.” - (I adore and worship you- metaphor) “If you cut me I would bleed the colors of the evening stars.”- (If you leave me, my pain will be so great and unbearable.)

  3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytLzxl4-mLw It's about a summer romance, where it says "your voice was the soundtrack of my summer..." meaning they have been with that person all summer, and once the summer ended they couldn't see each other again but the guy wish he did.

  4. Maroon 5's misery theme is abotu trying to get someonelse over his sadness."Silence is Killing Me"
means the singer is afraid that sadness is glooming up his day."Why wont you answer me" makes the singer feel like why is he unhappy st the time."I am in Misery" means at this time he feels unhappy."There ain't no other who can comfort me" means only one person can comfort him.

"The Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel is an allegory of the 1960's decade. They are trying to describe what it is like to live during the time of turbulence and decadence. The song incorporated much symbolism and figurative speech, from the simple metaphors, simile to the idiosyncrasy, allusion and oxymoron, my favorite of which is:

    "People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    And no one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence"

which describes the current situation during that time, people who keep talking but not addressing the proper authorities, pretending like to hear but thinking about different things thus not really listening, thinking only for themselves not caring about others, and letting the situation as it is and not do anything about it. This is the meaning of this song. This is the sound of silence.

    Enchanted - Taylor Swift
This song is about love at first sight. The artist met someone and fell for him. All she could do was hope that he won't forget the time that he spent with her. She was also wondering if he was single or in love with someone else.

  7. Thanks

Jaime - what is the title of the song? The link is dead I think.

Pancho - perfect example of figurative language!

Nico - I like that line "your voice was the soundtrack of my summer". The line that followed that (about thunder)is also a great example of figurative language.

Larry - Why do you think the silence is killing him?

Dishwalla - Somewhere in the middle
The song's about a guy falling in love with this girl but somewhere along the way he got stuck in a rut.

"Tripping hard, falling down onto the floor
    cause I can't stand up
    and I can't fall down
and I'm somewhere in the middle of this"

says that he's confused and doesn't know where to turn.

"you had this look that of an angel
it was such a bad disguise
when you drink it makes you angry
when I drink I want you more and more and more"

says he's also in love with the person he's apologizing to.

I picked this song because I've been in his situation alot of times before. This song's also very dear to my heart.

  11. Do I have to chose one? Umm...how about...

    So Weightless by David Choi:

I think that the song means that he falls in love and he feels light; weightless. He feels helpless in this emotion. He's in this happy haze (even if the girl doesn't answer the question: Could I stay with you?)
